Why Fall Is the Best Time to Plant a Native Garden in San Diego

In North County San Diego, fall doesn't necessarily feel like the beginning of gardening season. The days can still be warm, the hills are dry, and spring may seem like the more natural time to start planting.
But for California native landscapes, fall is one of the best times to get plants in the ground.
California's native plants have evolved with our Mediterranean climate, where summers are typically hot and dry and much of our rainfall arrives during the cooler months. Planting in fall gives new plants an opportunity to establish their root systems during cooler weather and take advantage of seasonal rains before facing their first dry summer.
The California Native Plant Society recommends fall through spring for planting natives, with late fall offering particularly favorable conditions.
Strong Roots Make Stronger Gardens
When you plant in fall, much of the important work happens where you can't see it.
While growth above ground may appear slow, roots are becoming established beneath the soil. By the time warmer weather arrives, a well-established native plant is better prepared for San Diego's long, dry season.
That can mean a healthier landscape and, once established, less dependence on supplemental irrigation.
Fall Is Also the Perfect Time to Rethink Your Landscape
If you've been considering removing thirsty lawn, replacing struggling plants, creating habitat for pollinators, or simply making your yard feel more connected to Southern California, fall is a great time to begin.
A successful native landscape starts with more than choosing beautiful plants. Sun exposure, drainage, soil conditions, mature plant size and irrigation all need to work together.
That's where thoughtful planning makes the difference.
At Kelly Green Native Landscape, we design and install native landscapes throughout North County San Diego with the goal of creating gardens that are beautiful, resilient and rooted in place.
